Shaving a dog’s coat in the summer is a topic that can be a bit controversial and depends on various factors, including the breed, type of coat, and the climate in your area. I don’t really recommend the shaving of pet’s hair in Summers though because my pointers are bit different but here are some things to consider:
Double-Coated Breeds: Many dog breeds have a double coat, consisting of a soft undercoat and a protective outer coat. Breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and Pomeranians fall into this category. These coats actually have insulation properties that help keep dogs cool in the summer by providing shade and airflow. Shaving them can disrupt their natural cooling mechanisms and even lead to sunburn if the skin is exposed.
Protection from Sunburn: Dogs with light skin or thin coats are more prone to sunburn if they’re shaved too closely. The coat acts as a natural barrier against the sun’s rays. If you do decide to shave your dog, it’s important to leave a layer of fur that offers some sun protection.
Regulation of Body Temperature: A dog’s coat also helps regulate their body temperature. It acts as insulation not only against the heat but also against the cold. Shaving a dog’s coat might interfere with their ability to regulate their temperature effectively.
Risk of Skin Issues: Shaving a dog’s coat very short can expose their skin to potential irritants and insects, which can lead to skin issues.
Consulting a Professional: If you’re considering shaving your dog for the summer, it’s a good idea to consult with a professional groomer or your veterinarian. They can offer advice based on your dog’s breed, coat type, and overall health.
Regular Brushing: Regular brushing is often more beneficial than shaving. It helps remove loose fur, prevents matting, and promotes healthy skin and coat. Some groomers offer a process called “coat stripping” for certain breeds, which removes the dead undercoat and leaves the protective outer coat intact.
In summary, while shaving dogs in the summer might seem like a logical way to keep them cool, it’s important to consider the specific needs of your dog’s breed and coat type. Always consult with professionals before making a decision, and if you’re unsure, opt for regular brushing and keeping your dog hydrated and cool through other means, like providing shade and access to water.
