In Islam, there are several Hadiths (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) that emphasize the importance of treating animals with kindness and compassion. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have shown great care and concern for animals and encouraged his followers to do the same. Here are a few Hadiths related to animals in Islam:
- Compassion for Animals: “Whoever is kind to the creatures of God, he is kind to himself.” (Bukhari and Muslim)This Hadith underscores the importance of treating animals with kindness and compassion as a reflection of one’s own character.
- Providing for Animals: “A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way; there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst, and came out. Meanwhile, he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, ‘This dog is suffering from thirst as I did.’ So, he went down the well again, filled his shoe with water, and held it in his mouth to give the dog water to drink. God appreciated his action and forgave him. The people asked, ‘O Messenger of God! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?’ He replied, ‘Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate (living being).’” (Bukhari)This Hadith highlights the importance of providing for the needs of animals, even when one’s own needs have been met.
- Not Overburdening Animals: “Do not use the backs of your animals as chairs. God has made them subject to you, so that by them you can reach places that you would not be able to reach by foot.” (Abu Dawood)This Hadith encourages the responsible use of animals for transportation or work while also emphasizing the need to treat them with care and not to overburden them.
- Kindness to All Creatures: “Whoever is kind to the creatures of God, he is kind to himself.” (Bukhari)This Hadith underscores the idea that kindness to all living beings, including animals, is a virtuous and rewarding act.
- Prohibition of Harm to Animals: The Prophet Muhammad prohibited causing harm or inflicting suffering on animals without a valid reason. For example, he condemned the practice of using animals for target practice or as objects of amusement.
These Hadiths demonstrate the importance of compassion and kindness toward animals in Islam and the belief that humans are stewards of the Earth, responsible for the welfare of all living creatures. Islamic teachings encourage the ethical treatment of animals and promote their well-being.
