Winters Can Be Bit Challenging For Pets

Winter can be harsh on animals, whether they’re pets, strays, or livestock. As temperatures drop, their needs change, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they stay healthy and protected.

1. Keep Them Warm
  • Provide insulated bedding and draft-free sleeping areas.
  • Small, short-haired, senior, or sick animals may need sweaters or extra blankets.
  • Never leave pets outside for long in freezing weather.
2. Extra Nutrition & Hydration
  • Animals burn more calories in winter to stay warm. Slightly increase food portions if needed.
  • Ensure access to clean, unfrozen water. Use heated bowls if available.
3. Protect Paws and Skin
  • Ice, salt, and chemicals can irritate paws. Clean them after walks.
  • Apply pet-safe paw balms for dogs.
  • Dry skin is common—add omega oils or use vet-approved moisturizers.
4. Safe Outdoor Time
  • Limit exposure during extreme cold.
  • Keep an eye on signs of hypothermia: shivering, lethargy, stiff muscles.
  • For community animals, create simple shelters using cardboard boxes, Styrofoam, or wood.
5. Car & Garage Safety
  • Cats often hide in car engines for warmth—always knock on the hood before starting.
  • Antifreeze is toxic; keep it sealed and clean spills immediately.
6. Exercise & Mental Stimulation
  • Reduced outdoor time can lead to boredom.
  • Provide indoor play, puzzle feeders, and training sessions.
7. Special Care for Senior or Ill Animals
  • Arthritis worsens in cold weather.
  • Use orthopedic beds, keep them warm, and consult your vet if mobility declines.
8. For Livestock & Outdoor Animals
  • Ensure windproof shelters and proper bedding.
  • Provide extra roughage (like hay) to help generate body heat.
  • Constant access to clean, unfrozen water is essential.
Winter is tough, but a little care goes a long way.

Animals rely on us to keep them safe—let’s make sure they stay warm, fed, and loved through the cold season.
