What Is FLUTD In Cats

One of the most common illnesses in cats is Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). This condition affects the bladder and urethra. It includes problems like urinary tract infections, bladder inflammation, crystals, and urinary blockages. FLUTD is especially common in indoor cats and is often linked to low water intake, stress, obesity, and dry-food diets. Symptoms include frequent urination, straining in the litter box, blood in urine, and urinating outside the litter box. If left untreated, it can become serious. It might even be life-threatening, particularly in male cats. Early detection and veterinary care are essential.

UTIs can develop due to several factors, including low water intake, which results in concentrated urine that irritates the bladder. Stress, obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, bladder stones, and poor litter box hygiene also increase the risk. Male cats are particularly vulnerable because their narrow urethra can become blocked, turning a urinary issue into a life-threatening emergency.
