Bacteria cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) in cats when they enter the urinary system. Several factors can contribute to this. These factors include low water intake and stress. Other factors are bladder stones or crystals, obesity, and poor litter box hygiene. Underlying conditions like diabetes and kidney disease also play a role. These infections are more commonly seen in older cats. Dealing with a UTI in cats requires prompt veterinary diagnosis, as not all urinary problems are bacterial in nature. Treatment may include antibiotics when an infection is confirmed, pain relief medication, and prescription urinary diets. At home, owners can support recovery by increasing the cat’s water intake through wet food or water fountains. Keeping litter boxes clean helps too. Owners can also reduce environmental stress. Maintaining a healthy weight is important as well. Early intervention is crucial, as untreated urinary issues can lead to serious and life-threatening complications, especially in male cats.
