Every City is taking action for the safety of Animals. People are coming together to raise the voice of the Voiceless.

Amsterdam has approved a new initiative to improve animal safety in its canals. The city is allocating up to €100,000 for installing small rescue staircases along the waterways. The proposal follows reports indicating that at least 19 cats drowned in the city’s canals in 2025. To reduce the risk of further incidents, the staircases will be installed at high-risk locations. These locations have been identified in collaboration with local animal welfare organizations.

The staircases are carefully designed to complement Amsterdam’s historic canal landscape. They will blend discreetly into their surroundings. These staircases provide cats and other animals with a safe way to climb out if they fall into the water.
