Since, the rainy season has made it’s decision to stay, linger on for a while, all we can do is to take care of ourselves and take some precautions before it gets too late. Like previous year, there have been cases where we witnessed people falling sick and ended in the hospital due to lack of clean water or they got sick due to the outbreak of the disease. Therefore, these are some factors that we are sharing for your knowledge.

After heavy rainfall, there can be various risks and hazards that you should be aware of to stay safe. Here are some tips to help you stay safe from the after-effects of rainfall:

  1. Flood Awareness: Be aware of flood risks in your area and stay informed about flood warnings and advisories issued by local authorities. Follow evacuation orders if necessary and avoid areas prone to flooding.
  2. Avoid Floodwaters: Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters as they may be deeper and more powerful than they appear. Floodwaters can conceal hazards such as submerged debris, open manholes, and swift currents.
  3. Check for Structural Damage: Inspect your home, building, or property for any signs of structural damage caused by rainfall, such as leaks, cracks, or weakened foundations. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage or collapse.
  4. Use Caution Around Downed Power Lines: Stay away from downed power lines and report them to the authorities immediately. Assume that all downed power lines are live and dangerous.
  5. Beware of Landslides and Mudslides: Be cautious of landslides and mudslides, especially if you live in areas prone to such events. Pay attention to any signs of land movement such as cracking or tilting of the ground, and evacuate if necessary.
  6. Use Protective Gear: When cleaning up after rainfall, wear appropriate protective gear such as gloves, boots, and masks to protect yourself from contaminated water, debris, and mold.
  7. Prevent Mold Growth: Remove standing water and dry out affected areas as quickly as possible to prevent mold growth. Use dehumidifiers and fans to aid in the drying process and consider hiring professionals for extensive water damage restoration.
  8. Secure Outdoor Items: Secure outdoor furniture, equipment, and other items to prevent them from being swept away or causing damage during heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding.
  9. Be Mindful of Waterborne Diseases: Be cautious of waterborne diseases that may arise after heavy rainfall, especially if your area has experienced flooding. Avoid contact with contaminated water and ensure proper sanitation and hygiene practices.
  10. Stay Informed: Stay informed about road closures, transportation disruptions, and other safety advisories issued by local authorities in the aftermath of heavy rainfall. Use trusted sources of information such as official government websites and local news outlets.

By following these tips and staying vigilant, you can stay safe from the after-effects of rainfall and minimize the risks associated with flooding, structural damage, and other hazards.
