This is a basic thought that runs in our head when we see a Cat that requires immediate help. However, we don’t take action because we don’t know what to do. Here it is a little information that can help you help the Kitten or a Cat at spot.
When you come across a kitten or a cat on a rainy day, first ensure their safety. Protect them from the harsh weather. Rain can cause hypothermia, stress, and illness in cats. Kittens are more vulnerable. This is due to their small size and weaker immunity. Immediate help begins with carefully approaching the animal without startling it. Cats, especially strays, can be frightened. They may run away if approached too quickly. Therefore, maintaining a calm and gentle demeanor is essential. Once the cat feels safe, try to move it to a dry place. Make sure it is sheltered from the rain and cold winds.
Use a cardboard box, pet carrier, or a covered area with a clean cloth or towel. These can serve as temporary shelters. If the cat is wet, gently dry it with a soft towel to prevent its body temperature from dropping. Offering food and clean water is another critical step. Stray cats often struggle to find nourishment in bad weather. Hunger makes them more anxious and weak. Warm, soft food is ideal for kittens, while older cats may eat dry or canned food. If the cat looks injured, sick, or extremely weak, contact a nearby veterinarian or an animal rescue organization. Timely medical attention can save its life. Even if the cat seems healthy, it is wise to keep it safe. Wait until the weather clears. Exposure to cold and wet conditions can lead to respiratory infections or other health issues. If you cannot keep the cat permanently, you can still provide temporary protection. Do this until you find a shelter or someone willing to adopt it.
Rainy days can be cruel for stray and abandoned cats. However, small acts of kindness can make a huge difference in their survival and wellbeing. Offer shelter, warmth, food, and care to help them.
I would always recommend keeping a spare towel. Also, include a first aid kit with medicines and ointment. Don’t forget a jet box and any good dry cat food.
