In April 2015, in Egypt, a German Shepherd was left alone on a tiny apartment balcony. No food. No water. No way out. For days, she waited.

Starving, dehydrated, and exhausted, she made one last, desperate choice to save herself — she jumped.

She didn’t fall.

The heavy chain locked around her neck caught on the railing, leaving her dangling three stories above the ground. The metal dug into her throat as she struggled for air, crying out in pain and terror.

Thankfully, someone listened.

A neighbor heard her screams and refused to look away. They called for help immediately. Rescuers arrived within minutes and pulled her back over the edge — just in time.

Up close, her condition was heartbreaking. She was dangerously emaciated, weak from days without food or water, with a deep, painful wound around her neck where the chain had cut in.

She was rushed to the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) in critical condition. Although the shelter was already overwhelmed, they didn’t hesitate. They took her in, treated her life-threatening wounds, and fought for her.

Day by day, she stabilized. And soon, the goal was no longer just survival — it was a second chance.

That second chance came just weeks later. With the help of animal welfare volunteer Rania El-Kordy, ESMA partnered with U.S.-based Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation (SNARR). The dog, now named Bella, began her journey to a new life.

When Bella landed in the United States, everything changed. There was food, warmth, safety, and gentle hands where there had once been pain.

Today, Bella is unrecognizable from the dog on that balcony. She lives in Houston, Texas with a loving family and a new doggy brother — finally stretched out on the couch, relaxed, safe, and home at last.
