Cats can struggle in hot weather, especially during heatwaves. While they naturally regulate their body temperature through grooming and seeking cooler places, very high temperatures can put them at risk of dehydration and heatstroke.

How to Help Your Cat Beat the Heat

Keep fresh water available: Place several bowls of clean, cool water around the home. Some cats drink more readily from a water fountain.
Create a cool resting area: Keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day and provide a shaded, well-ventilated room.
Use fans or air conditioning safely: Air conditioning is particularly helpful during extreme heat. If using a fan, make sure your cat cannot reach the blades or electrical cords.
Provide a cool surface: Ceramic or tiled floors can offer a comfortable place for cats to lie down. You can also place a wrapped cool pack near their resting area—not directly against their skin.
Brush regularly: Removing loose fur can help reduce the insulating layer, particularly for long-haired cats. Avoid shaving the coat unless specifically recommended by a veterinarian.
Avoid strenuous activity: Encourage play during the cooler morning or evening hours rather than during peak daytime heat.
Never leave your cat in a parked car: Even with windows partially open, temperatures inside vehicles can rise dangerously quickly.
Pay extra attention to outdoor cats: Make sure they have access to shade, water and a safe place to escape the heat. During exceptionally hot weather, keeping them indoors is preferable.

Be Watchful When:

Rapid breathing or panting, excessive drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion, unsteady movement, collapse, or unusually bright/red gums can indicate serious heat stress or heatstroke.

If you suspect heatstroke, move the cat to a cool, shaded area and contact a veterinarian immediately. Do not immerse the cat in ice-cold water, as sudden extreme cooling can be harmful. Most importantly, remember that cats cannot tell us when the heat is becoming unbearable. As responsible pet parents, we have to notice the signs, provide a cool and comfortable environment, and make sure fresh water is always within reach.
